BC Epilepsy Society Scholarships

The BC Epilepsy Society is proud to announce that we have rewarded eight $1000 scholarships to people with epilepsy. The winners included individuals with volunteer and work experience in sports broadcasting, social work, photography, youth and immigrant services, hockey coaching, dance, criminal justice, fashion design, and various non-profits which support individuals with medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s, brain injury, and epilepsy. The winners ranged in age from 17 to 43, and will be furthering their education in arts, science, business and social work programs.
Here’s what some of them had to say about their experiences living with epilepsy along with their ideas for raising epilepsy awareness:
“To me, epilepsy is not a burden, it is more like a motivator. I have had the opportunity to recognize my weaknesses, learn from them, and improve, and at the same time come to realize that life is not perfect.”
“At first, my mom suggested that I should not tell my friends about what is happening to me. After having a couple more seizures, I felt that I just had to let it out. I am glad I did. I feel like I made my friends understand that living in this condition does not necessarily change a person. I’ve learned to live every moment in the fullest, appreciating all I have.”
“I think it is absolutely necessary to raise epilepsy awareness, and the place to start is in school. It is essential that children are made aware of epilepsy at a younger age so that they can be prepared if they, or someone they know is diagnosed and so that they do not receive false information. I hope that one day soon, epilepsy will be a common household name in the same way, diabetes, asthma, and other medical disorders are.”
“With an understanding of epilepsy and those diagnosed with the disorder, information will continue to be passed on from one individual to the next, impacting awareness on a larger spectrum beyond the community in which we live.”
BC Epilepsy Society scholarships are available to British Columbia residents aged 16 and older, who are Canadian citizens or who have landed immigrant status, and who are currently under a Canadian physician’s care for epilepsy. An applicant must be a current member of the BC Epilepsy Society. The deadline to submit a completed application is at the end of April of each year.
