March 8th is International Women's Day - Women and Epilepsy

Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. We at the BC Epilepsy Society would like to wish a happy International Women’s Day to all women living with epilepsy around the world! Find out more about International Women’s Day here.

Because it is International Women’s Day today, it is an important time to discuss how epilepsy affects women. It has been found that women living with epilepsy will face unique health challenges that men living with epilepsy do not face. This means that in addition to the health challenges commonly associated with epilepsy that are faced by both men and women living with epilepsy, women living with epilepsy will face additional health challenges.

Some women may not even be aware of these health challenges so it is important that all of us are better informed about what these health challenges are and how to combat them. Some of these unique health challenges can include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Issues related to puberty and adolescence (such as hormones and menstruation)
  • Issues related to reproductive health (such as sexual health, contraception and pregnancy and parenting),
  • Issues related to older age (such as bone health and menopause)
  • Issues related to certain anti-epileptic medications

You can find more information on the above topics and other topics through the BC Epilepsy Society’s Women in Mind program here.

Happy International Women’s Day everyone!
