Having COVID Cabin Fever? Here’s my Biggest Tip to Beat It

It has now officially been almost a year since the COVID-19 Pandemic first started. I don’t know about everyone else, but I started feeling worn out about the situation only a few months into it. As the year went on and the pandemic continued, my mental health slowly declined. I was feeling “COVID Cabin Fever”.

Cabin Fever, while not a medical term, is commonly used to describe the feelings of isolation. Increased irritability, restlessness, a lack of motivation, difficulty focusing and an increase in sleepiness and unhealthy eating habits as the weeks go on, are the key signs you might be experiencing Cabin Fever.

So how am I working to deal with it? I started talking to a counsellor.

Therapy may not be for everyone, but in the darkest moments of my COVID gloom, just having someone to vent to about it really made things a lot easier to deal with.

The great part about counselling right now is that most of it is done online, via Zoom. This makes it easy to do through your computer at home which helps to cut down on the barrier of accessing mental health services such as counselling, for those of us living with epilepsy who may be unable to drive.

Studies have also shown that Millennials are hit hardest with rising rates of anxiety and depression during the Pandemic. This means that it is more important than ever to take that step and talk to a counsellor!

While counsellors aren’t covered by many health plans, psychologists may be. Check your extended health care coverage to see if this is something that is covered for you!
