The Calm App – The Best Money I Spent in the Past Year!
Lack of sleep is one of my biggest triggers for seizures and one of the most common triggers for a lot of people living with epilepsy.
For many years, I suffered with insomnia brought upon by anxiety. I would lay up at night and my mind would run through different things including:
- Did I lock the front door?
- Did I turn the stove off?
- When is that meeting again?
- Did I remember to book that appointment?
- Did I set my alarm?
But it wasn’t until we had a windstorm, and I couldn’t calm my anxiety down enough to sleep, that I searched for apps to help keep my anxiety at bay. I downloaded a 30-day free trial of Calm, which is listed as the Apple App Store’s No. 3 app in the “Health & Fitness” category and has been described as a popular virtual tool for meditation and sleep.
I set a date on my calendar to delete the app before the $15 monthly subscription fee kicked in, but three months later, the sounds and features of Calm are still successfully lulling me to sleep, and I’ve found that it’s a small price to pay for a solid night of sleep.
The app provides a variety of settings. You can browse through hundreds of soothing podcasts that will guide you through various types of meditation, classified by different goals you’re hoping to achieve. For me, I’ve set it to play soothing music with a lady’s voice reminding me to breath in and out, though I’ve now listened to the app so many times that I don’t even notice the voice anymore as it lulls me to sleep!
The app also comes in handy for many other situations. In the “Beginners” section of the meditation’s menu, you’ll find the “Breathe Bubble,” which is a very soothing and intuitive feature that helps the user slow down and steady their breathing. I use this feature all the time when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
If you’re looking for help to learn to mediate or in dealing with anxiety, try the Calm app for sure! You can get the Calm app on the Apple App Store here and on the Google Play Store here.
