Partners in Teaching

Through our Partners in Teaching program, the BC Epilepsy Society provides free educational workshops on epilepsy awareness and seizure first aid and safety at schools, workplaces and other organizations across BC. To request a workshop, please click here.


WORKSHOPS:

Our workshops cover epilepsy awareness, how to recognize the different types of seizures, the general guidelines of seizure first aid, some of the safety considerations involved with epilepsy.

School workshops include information on ways that school staff can support the academic and social needs of students with epilepsy. School worhsops are an excellent addition to school professional developmental day activities or staff meetings. Teachers, educators, and other school staff across BC find our workshops to be helpful and informative. Click here for a letter about the workshops. School workshops can also include fun and age-appropriate lessons on epilepsy and seizures for classrooms of students of all ages. These workshops help to address stigma, teach students about epilepsy and seizures and empower them to learn how to be a good friend to a fellow student living with epilepsy.

INFORMATION SHEETS AND POSTERS

Epilepsy Fact Sheet
This answers common questions about seizures and epilepsy. It is an excellent overview for those who have no or limited knowledge of epilepsy.

Seizure Types and First Aid
This includes descriptions of different types of seizures and first aid. This includes absence seizures and other types of non-convulsive seizures.

Understanding Students with Epilepsy: Tips for Teachers
This describes the impacts of seizures on learning and gives suggestions on how to support children with epilepsy in the classroom.

School and Parent Partnerships
This gives an overview of school support services as well as practical advice and strategies to effectively communicate with school personnel.

Seizure First Aid Poster
This is a poster that describes first aid for convulsive and non-convulsive seizures in an easy-to-read format. It is excellent to post on school, workplace, or health centre bulletin boards. Contact our office to receive this poster in an 11×17 colour format.

These videos explains facts about seizures and epilepsy, including recognizing seizures and first aid.  They describe associated learning difficulties and teaching strategies to assist children with epilepsy.  These videos were produced by the BC Epilepsy Society.

STUDENT RESOURCES

We provide a variety of resources that can be used within the classroom to help educate children and teens about epilepsy.
